Oct 3, 2023 · View Source. West of Kansas City is the Humboldt Fault and Nemaha Ridge, a buried granite mountain range that extends from Omaha to Oklahoma City. Though less active than New Madrid, there is still a potential for damaging earthquakes. On April 24, 1867, an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 5.5 struck near Manhattan, Kansas. A 2004 HAZUS report prepared by FEMA, based on a 7.7 earthquake occurring in the New Madrid Seismic Zone, estimates earthquake damages to be $296 billion dollars across the region and nearly 730,000 people displaced from their homes. In Missouri, the report estimates a direct economic loss of $69 billion dollars and nearly 87,000 damaged buildings. The ridge is associated with the seismically active Humboldt Fault zone. It is also associated with the Proterozoic Midcontinent Rift System, which extends into northern Kansas about fifty miles west of the Nemaha. Along the Nemaha Ridge is a series of faults referred to as the "Nemaha Fault Zone".
