Minerals in shale

As an important constituent of inorg. matter, clay minerals may affect gas-in-place of shale systems. Generally, Clay minerals are strongly hydrophilic with a water film bound on its surface, significantly reducing gas sorption capacity, which will lead to overestimate gas-in-place (GIP) of shale gas reservoir.

Jun 1, 2021 · 1. Introduction. Based on the long-term grand program of the Geology Departments, Faculty of Sciences, of both of South valley and Sohag Universities, Egypt, for the precise characterization of clay minerals common in many rock units scattered in various areas of Upper Egypt, this study was undertaken to identify and quantify the clay minerals of the upper Cretaceous-lower Tertiary beds ... The mineral composition plays a significant role, followed by the mechanical properties and mineral/organic carbon content of the shale, abnormal pressures (including fluid over-pressure effects), shale thickness, dehydration and ductile properties of the clay minerals, compaction and pressure solution during shale diagenesis, thermal shrinkage ...

Enhancing shale oil recovery after primary production is challenging as a result of the low injectivity of water. CO2 could be a promising injection fluid to enhance shale oil recovery for its high mobility in porous media and mixability with hydrocarbons. Fluid behaviors in the nanometer pores of shale reservoirs deviate from ... Shale rocks are frequently very heterogenous at a small scale. Standard examinations of shale rocks include the determination of the mineral composition using: XRD (X-ray diffraction), petrographic thin section studies (using both transmitted light and cathodoluminescence – CL), and; SEM (scanning electron microscope) analyses. Shale is primarily made from clay minerals like kaolinite, illite, montmorillonite, and smectite, with significant amounts of clay-sized particles of minerals like quartz, calcite, and feldspar. Small amounts of iron oxides and organic matter (sometimes converted to kerogen) are often present, as are fossils.

The mineral and petrographic composition of shale rocks is investigated by means of petrographic analysis. Shale contains a lot of clay minerals. Clay minerals mainly exist in nano- and micro-meter sized particles, and the pore structure is complex, which leads to its extremely complex wettability. The surface wettability of clay minerals significantly affects the oil and gas-bearing capacity of shale reservoirs. We use the general term pelite to refer to fine-grained clay-rich sedimentary rocks such as shale or mudstone. When metamorphosed, we call these rocks metapelites. Low-grade metapelites form at relatively low temperature (200-400 o C), ... These minerals form in pelitic rocks when metamorphism occurs at conditions on a Barrovian P-T path, shown …

Clay minerals are common constituents of the Miocene Surma Group reservoir rocks in the Sylhet Trough, Bengal Basin, and may exert significant controls on reservoir quality. The relationship between diagenetic clay minerals and reservoir quality in the petroliferous Sylhet Trough is poorly understood, however.
