Sugar Freak is a Cajun/Creole restaurant a block off the stretch in Astoria known as Little Egypt, but the big, packed space feels like a New Orleans-themed party. Beads hang from the light fixtures, and the big, packed space is full of groups sharing things like crawfish boils and jambalaya.

Last weekend we went to Sugar Freak, a delicious New Orleans style eatery hidden in plain sight on the busy 30th ave. The food, service and decor were all great and their name continues in the fine tradition of other high quality Astoria restaurants with terrible names (see Locale and Rest-au-Rant). We had brunch and will be back for dinner.Our visit to Sugar Freak was lively, with great service, and with my toe-in-the-water ordering turning out well, I think I will definitely go for one of their most NOLA-inspired dishes on my next visit.
