Joplin Mo. 64801. 65-69 the 396 was 396 and 4.094". in 70-72 the 396 was badged 396, 400 and 402 with a bore of 4.126" and it was 402 CID. SS396 sounds sexier than SS400 or 402.... I have never had a failure with the 289 block. It was in the 70-73 big Chevy cars and trucks. Maybe other years but all the block I have used were dated between those years. I have built 30-40 engines over the past 25 years and the block has never been a problem. Even when I bored them to 4.375 for drag only use they worked great....we see that on a Chevy 454 V-8 (4.25-inch bore x 4.0-inch stroke), a 0.060-in overbore (4.31-inch final bore size) yields a 466.9ci engine, but keeping the stock 4.25 ……

That's a little backwards. The Can Am block was nothing more than the ZL-1 block, which came first, that was cast of Alcoa 390 alloy that was a high silicone alloy that they ran tinned pistons directly on the aluminum with no iron liners. You need low to mid-range torque to haul that load down the highway and that means a fairly mild cam. I'd build it 9.0:1 static compression ratio and use a cam with no more than 215 degrees duration @0.050" lift on the intake side.
