Jan 19, 2005 · this is an age old debate.. but, my opinion is this: -both the .357 and .45 are effective handgun rounds. -typically (there are exceptions) the .357 is fired from. a revolver and a .45 is normally fired through a semi-auto. - the difference in firing platform is more of a factor I believe. However, one major difference between the .45 and 9mm bullet is the amount of expansion that occurs when the hollow point opens up. In general, a 9mm round will expand from 0.355” to around 0.6”, virtually doubling in diameter. By contrast, the .357 Magnum round is about 35,000 PSI and is anywhere from 1,200 to 1,400 fps from the 4" barrel. Personally, I like and use both.The .45 ACP Cartridge. The .357 would seemingly have penetration on it's side. So it may very well be a more potent round for a wild hog. I do not reload, but not sure if a plus P .45 ACP would offer that much more potentcy. My 1911 was stoked with my usual self defense carry rounds.
