Caucasian region
The North Caucasus region lies in the southwestern-most corner of the Russian Federation, and was colonized by the Russian Empire in the nineteenth century. It is bounded by the Black and Caspian SeasCaucasus, mountains and region lying between the Black Sea (west) and the Caspian Sea (east) and occupied by Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia. The great historic barrier of the Caucasus Mountains rises up across the wide isthmus where Europe and Asia converge. Mount Elbrus is its highest peak.
