King clearly doesn't have the writing chops for subtlety at this stage so he just goes to whatever is most shocking and distressing with the off-cast. Peter Straub and King are friends and they decided to write of a haunted town one night. Salem’s Lot was King’s entry and Ghost Story was Straub’s. If you enjoyed one then try the other. Both are good books, but I think Straub won the competition. It was a bit slow in start but then picks up.
