It's a panic blood moon. Blood moons are actually a cover-up for the game to soft reset the physics/graphics/etc. engines in the code. It prevents the game crashing/locking up. That's why regular blood moons happen on a (sort of complex) schedule, about every 3 hours, to keep those engines running clean. Regular Blood Moons happen on a set timer of around 3ish hours of active gameplay, so skipping days at a campfire or killing enemies won't do anything.
