Guard counter is only good against imps in dungeons. Totally useless against most regular enemies and a death sentence against bosses. I ran dual wield katanas until ng+ when I picked up the jellyfish shield, idk how you can lose when you’re using a shield. Guard counters make everything but bosses so so easy. Shields are brokenly good. Guard counters can be good but they're very situational. Nice for posture damage. Guard counter is like the middle attack between fast R1 and slow full charged R2. You need a window to properly hit with the attack or you'll get hit first or after if the enemy didn't get staggered.So, rant time. Guard counter is good, but it works much better with greatshields. You can likely only block 1-2 hits with a decent stability medium shield against a lot of bosses. With greatshields you can often block entire combos.
